Dora Award Nods and Wins for RAPA Alumni

In what the Toronto Star billed a "surprise win" alumnus Jahlen Barnes ('15) was presented with the 2017 Dora Award for Outstanding Male Performance for his performance in the Obsidian Theatre/Musical Stage Co. (formerly Acting Upstage) co-production Passing Strange at the 38th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards on June 26, 2017.

Alumna Lisa Berry ('04) was also nominated for her performance in Soulpepper's Father Comes Home From the Wars (Parts I, II, III), which won Outstanding Production. Other RAPA nominees included Keisha T. Fraser ('98) and Darcy Stewart ('13), part of the Outstanding Performance - Ensemble in Matilda: the MusicalAmaka Umeh ('14), Outstanding Performance - Female, James and the Giant Peach; Kit Boulter ('12), Outstanding Performance - Individual, Treasure Island; Erin Norah Thompson ('02), playwright, Outstanding New Play, Meet Cute.

Alumni Rashaana Cumberbatch ('15), Sydney LaForme ('16), Sofia Rodriguez ('15) , Alfonso Banzon ('15), and Tyler Burton ('15), with current student Nic Mencia joined host Raoul Bhaneja for the big closing number. For the fourth time ever, on-stage talent at the Doras were costumed by faculty member Rosanna Saracino, this year assisted by Morgan O'Grady ('15) and current student Sinéad Plunkett-Blazi.

The 38th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards for the 2016-2017 season were handed out in on Monday, June 26 at Toronto's Elgin Theatre. The awards are produced and presented by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) and celebrate excellence in Toronto theatre, dance and opera.
